Montgomery County Proclaims Day of the Girl

Today, Montgomery County Maryland was among the first counties in the United States to designate a Day of the Girl. Four representatives of the Day of the Girl campaign were at the ceremony to present the vision and mission of our year-long campaign to create a national day to recognize girls.

WHEREAS, gender equality is a fundamental right for all people, and research supports that investing in girls can create a ripple effect that not only improves the lives of girls, but also benefits the economic growth and the health and well-being of communities; and

WHEREAS, School Girls Unite joins with other local and state organizations to advocate for gender equality for girls, domestically and internationally, by improving girls’ lives through educational scholarships in Mali, speaking out against child marriage and advocating for endorsement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals of gender equality and education for all; and

WHEREAS, The Day of the Girl will empower girls to fight back and report gender-based violence; approximately one in three adolescent girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner and at least one in every three women worldwide is a survivor of some form of gender-based violence; and

WHEREAS, The Day of the Girl is dedicated to education about the importance of girls to speak out against the injustices they endure to advocate for their equality wherever they live in the world, celebrating all girls’ potential and speaking out against gender-based injustices to encourage girls to follow their dreams;

NOW, THEREFORE, DO WE, Isiah Leggett as County Executive, and Valerie Ervin as County Council President, hereby proclaim, Thursday, September 22, 2011, as THE DAY OF THE GIRL in Montgomery County  and call upon our fellow residents to pay tribute to this cause that is valued in our community.
